Research
Evidence first. It's the whole point.
Operis exists to replace a record built on memory with one built on observation. That standard applies to us too: every claim we make traces to peer-reviewed science, federal review, or data a partner site can inspect.
Publications
Built on published science
The feasibility of camera-based recognition of anesthesia medications was established in peer-reviewed research published in npj Digital Medicine — work co-authored by our academic scientific advisor. Operis extends that foundation from feasibility toward a clinical-scale system: ambient capture, on-device inference, and a documentation pipeline built for real ORs.
Grants
An NIH STTR award, with the University of Washington
Operis's core research program is funded through an NIH STTR award from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering — a peer-reviewed judgment by a federal scientific panel that this approach merits investment. The award supports accuracy validation with our academic research partner, the University of Washington, with a Phase II pathway behind it.
Partners
The research network
- University of Washington — academic research partner on our NIH STTR award; home institution of our academic scientific advisor and of the wearable-camera research lineage this field is built on.
- Carnegie Mellon University — Operis funds a sponsored research collaboration with the group of Professor Justin Chan — first author of the foundational npj Digital Medicine paper — at CMU's School of Computer Science, focused on synthetic training-data generation for medication-label recognition.
- Vigilant — our sibling company: a decade of anesthesia labeling infrastructure in 24 of the top 40 U.S. health systems, and the structured label formats our recognition stack reads.
Open questions
The questions we're answering next — with partners
- Recognition accuracy across drug classes, concentrations, and label conditions
- Documentation burden: clinician minutes returned per case
- Reconciliation: discrepancy rates surfaced against dispensing-cabinet records
- Diversion detection: sensitivity and time-to-signal
- 340B capture: eligible administrations documented versus baseline
- Provider experience: wearability, trust, and adoption
Founding sites co-author the studies their data produces. If your institution wants to own one of these questions, the founding site program is where it starts.
The record so far
The field's literature is one paper deep. The rest hasn't been written.
The first Operis validation studies are being designed now with our founding cohort. New results will be listed here as they publish.
For researchers
Working with us
We collaborate with academic teams on the hard problems — recognition robustness, workflow measurement, diversion analytics — with a simple philosophy: partners take the publications, patients get the safety, and the science stays rigorous because careers depend on it.
